tastecard members to transform thousands of lives with generous gift

Members of UK diners’ club tastecard have raised £71,595 to donate to school feeding charity Mary’s Meals.

The cash was pledged through a promotion that promised a £5 donation to Mary’s Meals for every 90-day tastecard trial purchased. More than 14,300 trials were sold during the campaign, which brings the running total of tastecard’s support to £230,000 over four years.

Mary’s Meals encourages impoverished children into school by providing a nutritious daily meal in a place of education. As part of its ongoing partnership with the charity, the funds donated by tastecard will help to transform the lives of thousands of hungry children in Malawi, by covering the annual cost of providing the daily meals.

Around three million people across the UK are currently members of the tastcard diners’ club, which offers 50% off or 2 for 1 meals at more than 6,600 restaurants nationwide.

Matt Turner, founder and CEO of tastecard, said: “From the first time we heard about Mary’s Meals we were moved to help and happy to choose them as our official charity partner.

“The work that they do is beyond admirable, and the fact that 93p in every £1 donated is spent on charitable activities illustrates how committed they are to ensuring that monies received are put to work where they should be.

“To think that a child can be fed and educated for a year for roughly the amount we donated per order was extremely tangible for our members, and helped us to raise over £70,000 this year. As in previous years, we know that the money raised will be put to work in the best possible way by Mary’s Meals”

More than 1,035,000 children across 12 countries currently receive Mary’s Meals at school. The charity’s vision is that every child should receive one daily meal in their place of education – whether their classroom happens to be in a government building or under a tree.

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, founder and CEO of Mary’s Meals, said: “We’re so grateful for the ongoing support from tastecard and the wonderful difference being made, thanks to generous members and staff.

“It’s heartening to see how many people are keen to share what they have with others who lack the basic things in life. I’ve seen first-hand the difference that a daily mug of porridge makes to hungry children in Malawi – it makes them happy and keeps them healthy, and it also allows them to learn.

“Thanks to tastecard and its members, yet more children will enjoy Mary’s Meals and the opportunities that a daily meal can bring.”
