World Porridge Day round-up!
World Porridge Day was created in 2009 as gift for Mary’s Meals, to raise awareness of our school feeding programmes and the difference that a daily mug of porridge served in a school can make to some of the world’s poorest children.
Lots of people mark the tenth of October by eating porridge and many of our supporters organise porridge events to raise funds for our work. This year, we teamed up with Scottish oats company Stoats and encouraged everyone to join in with a fun campaign called Porridge Smiles, which involved arranging toppings on your porridge to create a smiley face, then donating to Mary’s Meals to make a hungry child smile too!
We kicked off the campaign at a porridge party in Edinburgh on October 3 with our friends from People’s Postcode Lottery and Stoats, showing everyone how to create tasty porridge smiles and encouraging support for Mary’s Meals.
The following week, from Blairgowrie to Bolton, people enjoyed bowls of tasty porridge with all sorts of toppings and the resulting photos are fabulous! You can see some of our favourite #PorridgeSmiles snaps below.
The campaign reached beyond UK shores, too, with friends from the Mary’s Meals family getting involved in Canada, USA, Spain, The Netherlands, Malawi, Ireland, Kenya and the Channel Islands!
In St Hellier, the whole town came together to celebrate during Porridge Week. The Rotary Club of Jersey hosted the event and invited BBC Radio Jersey to cover the action. Stalls lined the main street, with local hotels cooking up pots of porridge and local businesses providing yummy toppings, all available for a donation to Mary’s Meals.
Schools, churches and workplaces got behind the campaign with great enthusiasm, too. Some of the most inventive porridge smile pictures have been send in from young school children, not only in the United Kingdom, but also in Kenya!
Dundee-based company, Insights, launched its Charity of the Year partnership with Mary’s Meals on World Porridge Day and invited its worldwide offices to join in the fun. And in churches up and down the country, congregations raised smiles and vital funds for Mary’s Meals.
Of course, in Malawi, where we provide a daily meal of maize-based porridge (likuni phala) to more than 880,000 hungry children every school day, staff and volunteers also joined in the fun. You can’t miss those photos – just look at the size of those porridge pots!
At a time when Malawi is suffering a terrible food crisis and the daily mug of porridge served by Mary’s Meals is more of a life-line than ever, THANK YOU for getting behind World Porridge Day and helping us to make more hungry children smile with porridge. You can still make a difference: text ‘OATS16 £2’ to 70070 to donate £2 and provide a child with daily meals in school for a month!
