Bernadette’s story
The BBC Radio 4 Appeal will feature the story of Bernadette, 29, a teacher at Chilomoni Primary School in Malawi. As a child, Bernadette attended the very same school, but had very little food at home which affected her learning.
In 2008, Chilomoni started serving Mary’s Meals, giving Bernadette a hot, nutritious meal every school day, meaning she could concentrate in class. Bernadette is now a qualified teacher, where she sees the benefits of Mary’s Meals to her pupils every day.

About Mary's Meals
Mary’s Meals feeds more than 3 million hungry children every day. The promise of a nutritious meal at school attracts these children into the classroom, where they can gain an education and hope of a brighter future.
The charity’s low-cost approach means that it costs just £19.15 to feed a child with Mary’s Meals every day for a school year. This is only possible because of many dedicated volunteers across the globe – from people in the UK who raise awareness, to those overseas who rise early to cook nutritious meals for their children.
- Mary’s Meals works in 16 of the world’s poorest countries: Benin, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, South Sudan, Syria, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Yemen.
