Planting seeds of hope: why I volunteer for a school feeding charity

Join Alison and our wonderful volunteer community in 2026

I’m Alison, and I’ve been volunteering with Mary’s Meals since 2011. After hearing a talk about Mary’s Meals at church, I decided to take the plunge and sign up as a volunteer! Having spent my career working with teachers and children in the community, the idea behind Mary’s Meals immediately made sense to me. I had no idea then just how much it would come to mean to me…

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of giving talks in churches, schools and community groups across Edinburgh, getting crafty by making and selling cards, and helping out at events. I like to think of volunteering as planting seeds – small seeds of hope that, over time, grow into something bigger. Seeing people start fundraising or getting involved after one of my talks is incredibly motivating and uplifting.

Over the years, I’ve also made some lovely new friends. It’s a joy to meet like-minded people, and there’s a real sense of family and of being part of something much bigger than yourself. I care deeply about children around the world who are living in poverty, without access to food or education. I can’t change that on my own, but through Mary’s Meals, I can make a difference.

Volunteering with Mary’s Meals fits easily into my life. I’m retired, and one thing I really value is that there’s no pressure. If I can’t commit to something, that’s OK. No matter how much or how little time you can give, you really do make a difference in the lives of children.

So, if you’re considering volunteering in 2026, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do it. Every effort counts and every contribution is valued. It still amazes me that just 10p can provide a meal for a child and what a difference that meal can make. I can hardly believe how Mary’s Meals has grown since I first heard about it!

We are now seeing the long-term impact too. A whole generation growing up, gaining an education and going on to strengthen their communities. Proof that a simple solution like Mary’s Meals really does work.
