Volunteers’ Week: Join the movement that’s changing lives
Discover why our incredible Mary’s Meals volunteers are so crucial and how you can join them
At Mary’s Meals, our mission is powered by the passion and dedication of incredible volunteers around the world. From the early risers in the communities we serve – who lovingly prepare school meals for local children – to our volunteers across the UK who raise awareness and vital funds, each person plays a crucial role. Together, their efforts help us feed more than 2.6 million hungry children every day.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, united by a shared belief: that no child should go hungry in a world where there is enough for everyone. This Volunteers’ Week, we are celebrating our wonderful volunteers and all that they do – and encouraging more people to join our global movement. Whether you have a few hours a week, or just a little time to spare, your support can make a meaningful difference.

When is Volunteers’ Week?
Running from Monday 2 June to Sunday 8 June 2025, Volunteers’ Week is a UK-wide annual campaign that begins on the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.
The initiative has been running for more than 40 years, offering organisations and communities a platform to thank both current and former volunteers for their invaluable efforts.
Why become a Mary’s Meals volunteer?
Volunteer with Mary’s Meals and you can try out new things in a supportive environment, boost your skills and make new friends along the way!
We have more than 60 volunteer groups across the UK, open to all, including students and young people. All our volunteers receive training, and you’ll have the chance to meet regularly with people, in your area or online, who all want to help feed hungry children.
Plus, not only will you help spread the word about Mary’s Meals but studies show that volunteering can also reduce stress, ease anxiety and boost your overall wellbeing!

Julie’s volunteer story
Julie McGowan, is one of our incredible Mary’s Meals volunteers in Scotland.
She says: “I heard about Mary’s Meals many years ago when my older children were in primary school. It’s a charity that really struck a chord with us. Over the years, I heard the charity spoken about in different places and then, five years ago when I was at mass, I heard a speaker appealing for people to volunteer for Mary’s Meals and I felt drawn to be part of this amazing force of good.
“Volunteering with Mary’s Meals is very flexible. I am a working mum of four children of varying ages, and I find I can easily fit speaking at mass around all my other commitments. You can do as little or as much as you choose. It is truly up to you!”
Looking to get involved? Here’s how you can help:
Share our story
The Mary’s Meals story is powerful – and you can be part of it. As a volunteer speaker, you’ll help us inspire others by giving talks in schools, community groups and churches. Your voice could be the spark that lights a flame in someone else's heart.
Become a community volunteer
Volunteers are the heart of our grassroots fundraising efforts. From organising fundraising events and distributing materials, to connecting with local businesses and communities, your enthusiasm can help us grow our impact locally and globally.
Represent us in your church
If you’re part of a church or faith community, you can help spread the word about our mission and share updates on our work by becoming a Mary’s Meals faith representative. It’s a wonderful way to combine your faith with action.
Every voice counts
Whether it’s a conversation with a friend, fundraising with others, an event you help organise, or a poster you put up in a local cafe, your contribution brings us one step closer to feeding the next child waiting for Mary’s Meals.
Ready to join Julie and our amazing network of volunteers to make a difference? Get in touch today – we’d love to welcome you to our mission!
